Hyundai Car Key Replacement: What Type of Key Does Your Model Use?
Hyundai has used several distinct key technologies over the years, and knowing which one your vehicle requires shapes everything about how a replacement is made. Older models like early-2000s Elantras and Sonatas typically use a basic laser-cut or double-sided metal key with no electronic component — these can usually be cut quickly from a key blank once we match the bitting code to your door lock or ignition. Mid-generation models added a transponder chip embedded in the key's plastic head; this chip must be programmed to your vehicle's ECU or the engine simply will not start, even if the physical cut is perfect. The Hyundai Elantra HEV and many late-model Tucsons and Santa Fes have moved to push-button smart key systems, where the fob communicates passively with the car — you never insert a key at all, and replacing this type requires both a new fob and a programming session that writes the fob's unique ID to your car's body control module.
We carry key blanks and programmable fob shells for a wide cross-section of Hyundai models and generations. When you call (770) 615-2479, our dispatcher will ask for your year, model, and VIN so the technician arrives with the right hardware already on the van, minimizing the time you wait on the side of the road or in a parking lot.
